It’s strange how one place can rearrange the way you see everything—your priorities, your past, your future. For me, that place was Bali. What started as a casual getaway from a burnout-filled routine turned into a life-altering journey that redefined how I live and what I value.
The Escape Plan
I booked the trip on impulse. Work had become a treadmill I couldn’t get off, and I was running on fumes. Bali came highly recommended—lush rice fields, sacred temples, vibrant culture, and the promise of calm. I wasn’t searching for anything spiritual, just a break. I signed up for a sunrise trek up Mount Batur, Bali’s active volcano. We started climbing at 3 AM, flashlights in hand, guided by locals who knew every rock and curve. The climb was steep and silent—except for the crunch of gravel and the occasional laugh among fellow travelers.
When we reached the summit, the sky was still dark. And then, almost imperceptibly, light began to spill across the horizon. The sun rose slowly over the island, painting the sky in gold, purple, and fire-orange. In that moment, sitting above the clouds, something cracked open inside me.
I didn’t check my phone. I didn’t think about work. I wasn’t worried about what came next. I was completely, entirely present.

When I returned, friends said I looked different—calmer, more grounded. They weren’t wrong. I made changes: reduced my screen time, incorporated mindfulness into my mornings, and started prioritizing people over productivity. Most importantly, I learned to pause.
Bali didn’t magically solve everything. But it gave me space—space to reflect, to reset, and to reimagine what my life could be.
